Our online talks for caregivers are back

This September, we’re resuming our online talks for non-professional and professional caregivers, focused on supporting people with cognitive decline and dementia.

As with previous sessions, all talks will be held live via Zoom, each lasting 90 minutes, and will be recorded for anyone unable to attend at the scheduled time. All talks will be led by clinical psychologist Elena Avilés.

The talks are grouped into two series, and you can register for individual talks or for the full series. Each talk costs €15, and registering for the full series comes with a discount on the total cost.

Series: “Understanding to Care: Cognitive Decline, Wellbeing, and Self-Care”

This series is recommended for those approaching cognitive decline and dementia for the first time. It consists of five talks offering a comprehensive overview of this condition. Throughout the sessions, participants will learn to recognize early changes, distinguish between the main forms of cognitive decline, understand challenging behaviors, and apply care strategies tailored to each situation. Essential attention is also given to the caregiver’s own wellbeing: emotional burden, guilt, the need to set boundaries, and the importance of asking for help and taking care of oneself.

The talks follow a progressive path — first understanding what is happening, then learning how to act — so attending the full series provides a solid foundation for caregiving with greater understanding, confidence, and security.

Talks included:

  1. Recognizing early changes: aging, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia.
  2. Learning about the different types of cognitive decline and dementia.
  3. Understanding challenging behaviors and emotional wellbeing.
  4. Applying general and specific strategies for daily care.
  5. Protecting the caregiver’s emotional wellbeing.

Series: “Acting Day to Day: Strategies for Difficult Situations”

This second series, made up of eight talks, focuses on the specific challenges that can arise in daily caregiving: difficulties with hygiene, eating, medication, mobility, agitation, repetitive behaviors, delusions, disorientation, and loss of autonomy.

Each session takes a practical approach: understanding what may lie behind each behavior, learning about its possible causes, discovering which strategies tend to help, and avoiding responses that can increase distress. Practical case studies and participants’ questions will help connect the content to real-life situations.

Talks included:

  1. Hygiene and self-care.
  2. Nutrition and medication.
  3. Safety and mobility.
  4. Agitation and aggression.
  5. Repetitive behaviors.
  6. Delusions and false beliefs.
  7. Disorientation and wandering.
  8. Loss of autonomy.
